Local Community Empowerment and Sustainable Development
Local Community Empowerment and Sustainable Development
UPHWO believes that local communities are the main actors and beneficiaries of sustainable development in Burundi. We support the empowerment of local communities, and their participation and ownership of their development processes, in various domains such as environment, governance, health, and livelihoods. We have two main programs that aim to:
- Enhance local environmental management and resilience: We help local communities to protect and restore their natural resources, such as land, water, forests, and biodiversity. We provide them with technical and financial assistance, and we promote the adoption of sustainable practices, such as agroforestry, soil conservation, and waste management. We also support local communities to cope with and adapt to the impacts of climate change, such as droughts, floods, and diseases. We provide them with early warning systems, disaster risk reduction strategies, and climate-smart technologies.
- Strengthen local governance and social cohesion: We help local communities to improve their governance and social cohesion, by enhancing their capacities, voice, and representation. We provide them with training, coaching, and mentoring, and we facilitate their access to information, rights, and justice. We also support local communities to engage in dialogue and collaboration with other stakeholders, such as local authorities, civil society, and private sector. We also foster peacebuilding and conflict prevention, by promoting dialogue, reconciliation, and social inclusion.
